Let’s take a walk down memory lane with a short historical overview before further explanation on why not all death records are accessible. 

Before 2011, the DMF was the leading source of death information. In November 2011, the SSA drastically reduced the number of death records that could be searched by prohibiting the disclosure of state records. Instead, the SSA now provides a Limited Access Death Master File or LADMF to the Department of Commerce’s National Technical Information Service (NTIS), which excludes state death records. The NTIS then sells the LADMF to agencies and private organizations that meet stringent data security requirements.

Because we recognize a large data gap exists by only relying on the LADMF for death data, we purchase state death records directly from those states that choose to make death records available as well as other proprietary sources and obituaries that are published in every newspaper in the United States.
